Your summer skin survival guide: top tips for healthy, glowing skin
Summer in the Northern Beaches of Sydney typically means lots of time spent at the beach and outdoors. But with the extra heat and humidity, our skin could use a little extra love. Whether you're soaking up the sun or trying to stay cool, here are my favorite summer skin tips to help you keep that healthy, fresh glow:
1. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!
- I can't stress this enough – sunscreen is THE number-one summer essential. If you’re already a client of mine, then you already know that sunscreen is non-negotiable.
-Go for a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to cover all your bases (UVA and UVB). Don’t skimp out and only do your face. Get the neck, and anywhere else the sun reaches.
- Make it a habit to reapply every two hours. If you’re swimming or sweating, reapply more often to keep that protection strong.
2. H2O
- Summer heat can be rough on your skin, leaving it feeling thirsty. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin happy from the inside out, I wont tease you about carrying a an emotional support water bottle I promise.
- Layer on hydration from the outside, too. Think of a lightweight moisturiser with our Hydrating Duo set from The Secret Skincare.
3. Ditch the heavy creams for something breezy
- Summer heat calls for lighter, breathable products that won’t feel heavy on your skin. Swap out thick creams for lightweight moisturiser serum to keep things cool and comfortable.
4. Exfoliate...but gently
- Exfoliating is great for clear, smooth skin, but too much can make you extra sensitive to the sun. Stick to gentle exfoliants (think fruit enzymes like The Secret Enzyme Mask) about once or twice a week.
- And avoid using gritty scrubs. Instead, go for chemical exfoliants that get the job done without any irritation.
5. Hide from the sun (if you can)
- The simplest trick to protect your skin? Find some shade! Especially from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest.
- Use either a wide-brimmed hat or a Limited Edition Preserve Hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves tops and pants (linen is my personal go to).
6. Add Vitamin C to your routine
- Vitamin C is a game-changer. This antioxidant not only brightens skin but also helps protect against damage from the sun and pollution. Use it under your sunscreen in the morning for an added boost. (If you have our custom prescription skincare then no need to worry as Vitamin C is already in your morning elixir cream.
- Vitamin C is also amazing for minimising those dark spots that tend to pop up with sun exposure.
7. Keep it cool, calm (and collected)
- Stash a facial mist or your moisturizer in the fridge for an extra-refreshing treat. It’s the quickest way to cool off and calm your skin.
8. Summer-ise your makeup
- Keep things light with a tinted moisturizer that has SPF – perfect for those beach days or casual outings.
9. Protect those lips
- Your lips are delicate, and they need protection too! Use a lip balm with SPF 15+ to avoid sunburn and chapping.
- Reapply often, and go for balms with nourishing ingredients like shea butter or coconut oil to keep your lips smooth and hydrated.
After-Sun TLC
- After a day out, help your skin recover with a little extra love. Aloe vera gel, cooling masks, or a calming moisturiser can soothe any redness and rehydrate.
- And don’t forget the inside – hydrate and add antioxidant-rich foods (like berries, leafy greens, and tomatoes) to help your skin bounce back.
In short…
- With a few simple tweaks, you can keep your skin looking fresh and glowing all season long. Protect, hydrate, and adjust your routine to beat the summer heat. Your skin will thank you!
Enjoy the sun (responsibly), and let’s keep that summer glow going!
